You must check the customer’s ID when an order contains age-restricted items. You’re required to do this even if the customer looks older than 18.
It’s against the law to sell age-restricted items to anyone under the age of 18. It’s your responsibility to make sure that you don’t deliver age-restricted items to anyone under 18.
When you pick up an order, check the receipt to find out if there’s alcohol included.
When you deliver an order containing alcohol, you must check the customer’s ID – even if they look older than 18.
You must not:
- Hesitate to ask for ID
- Deliver age-restricted items to a customer if you suspect that the ID shown is not genuine or if they refuse to show an ID. When this happens, contact Rider Support – don’t complete the order
- Deliver alcohol to the customer if you believe they’re already drunk
- Leave the age-restricted products anywhere except the delivery address. If the customer doesn’t provide proof that they’re over 18, the alcohol should be disposed of responsibly
- Ask for the customer's date of birth without checking their ID
- Deliver alcohol to customers in public places – alcohol can only be delivered to residential and business addresses
During the COVID-19 pandemic you should ask the customer to hold their ID at a distance for you to check, but you should not take it from them.
Acceptable forms of ID:
- European Union photocard driving licence
- Photographic identity card bearing the national Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) hologram
- National identity card issued by a European Union member state (other than the United Kingdom), including Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland
When checking ID:
- Confirm the photo on the card looks like the person showing the card
- Check the expiry date of the document to make sure it’s still valid
- Enter the customer’s date of birth and tap Confirm age – the app will tell you whether the customer is over 18
- If the customer is over 18 you can give them the order and mark it as delivered
- If the customer is under 18 or the customer doesn’t have ID, remove the age-restricted items and deliver the rest of the order
For any age-restricted items that can't be delivered, please dispose of these responsibly. You don’t need to return them to the restaurant or store.
You should not:
- give age-restricted items to anyone under the age of 18
- dispose of age-restricted items somewhere they’re likely to be accessible to anyone under the age of 18
- sell age-restricted items on to anyone else
- give alcohol to anyone who is already drunk
If you can’t deliver part of the order because the customer doesn’t have ID, is underage, or is already drunk, you'll still be paid the full fee for the order.
